Creative Inspiration Found in Mariposa County!

What a terrific downtown I found in Mariposa. From the high end restaurants like Savoury's, to the tea shop, bead and jewelry shop (where you can make your own jewelry in the back room at drop in classes.)

I love "Chocolate Soup" a huge home made into rooms and rooms of interior decor all arranged to inspire and enguage you in decorating.

It is so amazing to travel around and not only be inspired by the wonderful downtowns, but also to be inspired creatively!  Can't wait to get home and work on some projects!

Embracing 50!

Well, I turned 50 this year -- how liberating! All these past years I have been trying to be someone special -- someone who is smart and talented, with friends and a great job. So last year I went on a long journey of self-discovery so that I could enter the next phase of my life with peace and feeling positive.

Here I am at 50, with daughter Makay at her Wedding.

I've made a list of things I accept and ways I have tried to change....

I am not “perfect” nor do I seek perfection. I simply:

• Wake up positive

• Try new thing, new foods, new places
• Trying to cultivate my relationship spiritually, take care of my emotional well being

• Quiet my life, learn to slow myself down, practice mindfullness

• Try not to let my work get to me, I focus on what energizes me
• Practice …

• Walk my dog daily

• Read for pleasure, and not the news

• Bring my creative whims to life.  Create one new thing each month

And the things I don’t do anymore:

• Over eat

• Use others to fill my needs

• Overwork, overspend, over-indulge, over-everything

• Instigate and chase drama

• Be with people who aren’t positive influences
• Gossip (Okay, I'm still working on this)

• Pretend I’m something I’m not

Your list may differ and that’s more than OK. You are you! We aren’t carbon copies of each other, thankfully, and after decades believing something’s wrong with me because I’m just different.

So I went on a year long study of myself as I prepared for the new changes in this the second act of my life.  I have read:

My Own Piece of History...

While on a cruise with Richard we were a few days at sea when they had a special program introducing the Camrose and Kross  reproduced  Jacqueline Kennedy Collection of costume jewelry. I was intrigued.. I have always loved her classic style and find I am drawn to her fashion sense.

Well that day Richard bought me my own piece of fashion history.  I own a classic replica of a somewhat famous bracelet. Richard bought it for me on a cruise we went on, for my birthday.

I personally love this bracelet. It is absolutely beautiful. I think this bracelet looks great with a gold watch. You would think I spent hundreds of dollars for this bracelet. (He did not have to, it was a wonderful "deal")  It's a triple stripe gold tone bracelet has 288 Swarovski crystals. It is secured with a fold over clasp. The bracelet is 24k gold plated.  It came in a wonderful blue velvet gift box and iincluded a Camrose and Kross Certificate of authenticity. Also a romance card with some fascinating information about Jackie and her life was in the box.

History of the bracelet: 1963 - Ireland had a special place in JFK’s heart, but it was also very important to Jackie, whose mother was of Irish descent. So, Jackie too looked upon the imminent visit the Irish President Eamon de Valera with great expectations. By all accounts, the two couples got along famously and officially the Irish President presented to the Kennedy's a large Waterford Glass bowl, a doll for Caroline and a plastic pull toy for John Jr. However, after the main dinner, President Valera and his wife met with John and Jackie in the Yellow Oval Room on the second floor of the White House and presented her with this bracelet and matching earrings (I'm still looking for a picture of the earrings, I'd love to just see what they looked like). The Kennedy's were very moved, especially when President de Valera explained that he brought the gift because he was personally grateful for all the Kennedy’s had done for Ireland and its reputation abroad.

It was rare that JFK accepted presents, he wouldn’t even accept a salary as the President, so it is a great testament to how important this meeting was to him, that he allowed his family to take the bracelet. The bracelet design, made in three sections was to symbolize the connection between Ireland and the United States. One section stood for those who left Ireland to start a new life, one section stood those who stayed in Ireland to create the modern state, and these two flanked the center section symbolizing The Republic of Ireland. Jackie put on the bracelet and told President de Valera she would wear it on her up coming trip to Europe, and she did. Jackie wore it in England, Italy, Greece, and Morocco, and of course in the United States. This bracelet is still in the Kennedy family is and is worn with pride by John and Jackie's granddaughter.
Jackie and Lee with the kids, notice her wearing the bracelet!

January: National Hot Tea Month!

You all know I love a good cup of tea, and now I know there is a month dedicated to it's great taste.

"Come along inside... We'll see if tea and
buns can make the world a better place."  ~The Wind in the Willow~

Statistics show, tea has become the world's most popular beverage, consumed around the globe in amounts second only to water. One reason for this could be the health benefits of tea. Studies show that the antioxidant content in tea helps reduce the incidence of certain cancers and may help combat the risk of developing heart disease. There's no sign that the nation's trendiest drink will fizzle anytime soon as tea's been around for more than 5,000 years. Here are some tips on the art of taking tea:

1. Cream is never used - only milk and sugar. It is important to note that the milk and sugar go into the cup after the tea, never before.
2. It is important to execute little circular movements when stirring tea, without allowing the spoon to strike the side of the cup.
3. When using lemon, be sure to introduce it after the sugar has settled.
4. Perhaps the most flagrant and egregious mistake in tea etiquette occurs when the taker deliberately extends the fourth or "pinky" finger of his cup holding hand in an effort to exhibit sophistication.
5. While partaking of afternoon tea, there are two ways to eat the sandwiches: either treat them as finger food, or enjoy them "Continental" style, using a knife and fork.
6. Eat the savory, sour things first, saving the most "decadent," such as the petit fours, for last.
7. The most refined way to eat a scone is to break off little bits at a time, and apply the Devonshire cream and fruit preserve to each individual piece as it is to be eaten. And remember: preserves go first, then the cream.

My Mom and I at Filoli Museum and Garden's High Tea (Woodside, California) - It was amazing!

Trip to Coronada Island California

I loved the pier, families of all ages fish there and wait for the farey to come in braining loved ones and friends.

Hotel Del Coronado. This Victorian style seaside hotel was established in 1888, and was easily one of the biggest and best hotels of that era and is still today. For those who appreciate historical treasures and would like a taste of what it may have been like to live in another era, visit the Hotel Coronado for an ideal getaway for couples and families.

.

Coronado, which means "crowned one" in Spanish, is a small residential island and tourist destination off the coast of San Diego. Bordered by the Pacific Ocean, San Diego Bay and Loretta Bay, a laid back atmosphere and spectacular environmental setting have helped Coronado maintain a role as a resort getaway since the late 19th century. The island is easily accessible by ferry or car is great for a day trip or

We had dinner out on the patio of a nice Little Italian restaurant.

We spent some time at the marketplace. There you can rent a bike, pick up local maps or buy tourist items. Swim or go surfing on one of the beaches. I liked this totally sustainable "Green" bike.

Casa Munrus - A Wonderful Hotel in the Heart of Monterey

Historic Casa Munras is located in the beautiful coastal town of Monterey, California – right in the heart of Old-Town.

True to its Spanish heritage, this hacienda-inspired Monterey, CA hotel embraces its outdoor spaces while beckoning guests to gather in the charming social spaces and inviting them to retreat to the warm comforts of their living quarters.

The idea behind this lodging experience is to stay local, eat authentic. Immerse your appetite in flavorful history and enjoy local legacy dining at Estéban, adjacent to the hotel lobby.
Estéban offers a unique culinary experience where guests can "sip, savor and share" Mediterranean tapas and Spanish-inspired cuisine. Gaining its name from Don Estéban Munras, the last Spanish diplomat to California whom lived at Casa Munras, Estéban celebrates their family's tradition of culinary hospitality. Serving traditional dishes with a pinch of adventure.
We had a choice of outdoor dining with fire pits for warmth, or inside by the fireplace, we chose to stay close to the quaint fireplace and enjoy a sampling of dishes that we tasted and shared. (even ordered some dessert!)

We loved the hacienda décor and Central California accents, each guest room provides the perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle of more urban settings.

I was amazed at how they had a creative flair for decorating.  Each day the pillows on this couch were changed to show another way to place the pillows to accent the couches and chairs.  This quickly became a conversation started when we arrived for breakfast each morning.

Chaos-Free Mornings

In the New Year I am planning on adapting Chaos Free Mornings.

I find myself scrambling to find my cell phone, a jacket for the weather, something to eat on the bus and of course my keys. I barely make it out of the door with both shoes on, and almost miss my bus because I had to go back for something, breaking a sweat, before even getting to work. I want to get rid of this ritual; I want to have a stress free enjoyable time before I get into a hectic pace at work.

The most critical factor in organizing your day is your mental freshness, or mental fatigue. I feel like half of my mornings start out on the wrong foot and by the time I get to work I am exhausted. Here are some tips I am working on:

Get into a Routine

Have a specifically plan as to how your morning will go

Make a list on a post it notes of anything you need to remember.

List of what I need for work the next day and gathering spot to collect these items:

Bag to carry all I am taking to work

Lunch/snacks

Purse

Coat I am wearing with that outfit

Cell phone

Umbrella

Any papers/computer/books from the office that need to go back

Items I need for trips I make after work (coupons, dinner discount, returns, yoga clothes/mat)

The Night Before

Check my calendar

Make a short “To-Do” list

Backpacks and briefcases should be by the front door

Check the weather

Pick out clothes and accessories for next day

Pick out coat/hat/gloves or any outwear I need

Pack breakfast and lunch in reusable bag and place in fridge

Pull dinner option out of freezer and make sure I have ingredients or make a list to stop at store on way home. Fill crock pot and place in fridge.

Other Ideas that might help:

For truly relaxing mornings, reduce the number of choices and decisions you make to zero. Go about this two ways: First, make your morning decisions the night before: what clothes to wear, what breakfast to eat, what route to take to work, and so on.

When it comes to getting out of bed and facing the day, everyone is different.

I like to allow 15 minutes or me to wake up, stay in my jammies and read email, or surf the web with a question.

Keep any medications and/or a multivitamin out on the kitchen counter right by the coffee/tea pot so you remember to take one every morning.

Create healthy easy-to-assemble breakfasts such as smoothies and yogurt with granola.

Put my coffee/tea maker on a timer to save a few extra minutes.

On the weekend plan quick, healthy breakfasts, prepare what I can ahead of time

Also plan dinners for the week to save time and money on eating out, there should be no reason to swing by fast-food places last minute.

Brush your tongue for one minute. There's no better way to rid yourself of morning breath and begin your day minty fresh and clean. After all, more than 300 types of bacteria take up residence in your mouth every night. You think a quick brush over the teeth is going to vanquish them all?

Drink eight ounces of water. You've been fasting all night and you wake each morning dehydrated

Launch Location

Find a constant area of your house to place everything as you prepare for the next day. A launch pad could help you to” leave nothing behind.”

This is a place for charging cell phones and keeping keys, book bags and anything that needs to go out of the door with you.

My launch pad where I come and go from, right inside the garage entrance on a table in my sewing room.

Place a basket there for items you “may” need and unload items at the end of the day.

Make it an equally important habit to take things back into the house each evening./ That means take everything out of the car, wash your travel mug, lunch Tupperware, unload used napkins and wash out your lunch tote. Put away everything you do not need for the next day.

Survey everything you will need and place in the launching area. Getting ready for the next day will keep you stress free in the mornings.

Tips from others:

Prepare an emergency outfit in your closet. Include socks, jewelry, hose, etc., so on those mornings when you sleep through the alarm or simply need an extra 10 minutes, you can just pluck it off the hanger and go. (In case you change your mind that morning.)

Kiss all the people you love in your house (including the dog and cat) before you leave. Connecting with the ones you love soothes stress and provides you with a positive start to your day, as well as keeping you focused on what's really important says therapist Barbara Bartlein, L.C.S.W., author of Why Did I Marry You Anyway? 125 Strategies for a Happy Marriage.

Set your alarm 15 minutes earlier. This way, you don't have to jump out of bed and rush through your morning. You can begin your morning by lying in bed, slowly waking up. Stretching. Listening to the news headlines. Mentally clicking off what you're going to wear, what you're going to do, what you're going to have for breakfast. It's just as important to prepare yourself mentally as physically for your day. These few minutes in bed, before anyone else is up, are all yours.

Stretch every extremity for 15 seconds. Try this even before you open your eyes. Lift your arm and begin by stretching each finger, then your hand, then your wrist, then your arm. Then move on to the other arm. Then your toes, feet, ankles, and legs. Finally, end with a neck and back stretch that propels you out of the bed. You've just limbered up your muscles and joints and enhanced the flow of blood through your body, providing an extra shot of oxygen to all your tissues.

Above all be in the moment, enjoy your routine and try to slow down jut a bit.  The calmness when you arrive at work will be so "worth it"

Inventorying your dishware will make your entertaining choices easier

When I travel one thing I like to bring home is a piece of china or stoneware to coordinate with my dish sets.  My dish "collection" has really grown over the past 30 years so I now find it important to keep track of what I have.
I love to entertain and do a lot of it. I am always trying to figure our what dishes I have enough settings of while planning the event.  I found this free dishware inventory chart that I copied and put into a word document and added my own dishes to the template and now I can use this when planning a party, anniversary event or even a wedding.

This personal Inventory Form helps me organize my  china, stoneware, linens, dinnerware, Luncheon sets, Breakfast sets and special accessory pieces.   Even table cloths, silverware and more can be added.  This will streamline my planning and also help me add to my dish sets when I see them at flea markets or thrift stores.  (I included the link below.)

For a peak at the dishes I collect:

My formal china - Rosemead By Mikasa
My Christmas Dishes - Country Christmas by International
My traditional China - Diane (This one I have a LARGE set of more than 30)
My grandma gave me this wonderful set of Antique Grape stoneware by California Poppytrail - Metlox
My llargest collection by far is my collection of every color of Fiesta including the most rare Sapphire Blue.
Most recently my Mom gave our family Johnson Brothers White Heritage dishes made in England

So click here and start your own inventory.

TIP: I have also added photos so I can see if the special piece I am looking at on my travels will fit in with what I have.

Found something new out of something old

Book Jenna gave me for Christmas
I love the idea of second uses for things I already have.  I subscribe to Real Simple and enjoy every month the section on new uses for old things.  My daughter Jenna gave me the book Real Simple special publication 799 New Uses for Old Things. It's "an encyclopedia of innovative ideas for everyday items," packed full of good ideas—and I am already putting it to good use.  Here are some I have used in the first week of the New Year:

1) Umbrella: "Air-dry laundry. When an umbrella has lost the capacity to fend off raindrops, cut away the fabric and hang the frame upside down from a shower rod. Clip small, light items to the ribs with clothespins."

2) Name tags - I used old name tags to mark my Christmas boxes.  I also put one on the bottom of the plates I took to parties (including my phone number) in case I forgot to get them at the end.

3)Paper clip dispenser - I used a second one to hold my bobby pins in the bathroom

4)  My favorite reuse is a small lampshade I used to put my vintage pins for display (see below)

Thank you Jenna for the book.  I love it!

To see the 50 All-Time Favorite New Uses for Old Things

smartest ways to rethink common items.

Now I notice there is a second book that lists 869 new uses...hummmmmm        http://www.realsimple.com/

Wondering where I have been?

My daughter Makay was married this past week. To a wonderful guy named Josh. May they spend a lifetime of happy years together. The wedding was at our house, and didn't they look wonderful! I'm busy getting things back to "normal." Whatever "normal " is these days. So stay tuned for more soon. Jonelle'
