FOLSOM Pro Rodeo

I'm attending the 50th Celebration of FOLSOM Pro Rodeo July 4th. Richard and I are heading to the Folsom Pro Rodeo this weekend for the 4th of July festivities. I have heard so much about this rodeo and the exciting entertainment! We have never been to this event but certainly have heard about the fireworks. I'll bet this year, being their 50th anniversary will be especially exciting. There are many other activities like the chuck wagon races, mutton busting and childrens activities. After the rodeo Mike's Golden Spike Saloon opens and live entertainment of "The Dave Russell Band" provides some great country music. We might even take a turn on the dance floor once the music starts.
6:00 p.m. Rodeo gates open
7:00 p.m. Roping Events
8:15 p.m. Riding Events
Dusk: Area's best fireworks &

The Art of Tea - Inspiration and Ideas I've Collected

I had tea while on the road last week and it so inspired me to want to host a tea at my house this summer. I am gathering some ideas of themes and a craft project we can make together...

Decorate a Teapot
Party guests may bring their own teapot for decorating -- white or light colored. These can be found at thrift stores or even in your cupboard. You could also consider purchasing small white teacups from a craft store, kitchen store or discount outlet. Offer ceramics paints and paint brushes for the guests to add their artistic touches. If you choose this craft activity, have the guests paint their teacups at the beginning of the party to allow for drying time before taking them home. Bring a fun Tea Party Hat to show off at the party. Everyone enjoys dressing up, and a tea party is a fun occasion to do such. Ask your favorite aunt or grandma for a fun vintage hat -- the vintage ones are always the best!

As a favor bag, fill each bag with an assortment of herbal or fruit tea bags, including raspberry tea, peppermint tea, passion fruit tea, chai tea, and perhaps even chocolate flavored tea.

Below are a few fun ideas for using tea accessories for decorating!

Spring is here and I have found lots of inspiration to creating special tea excitment

Inspiration is Everywhere this Spring!

My friend Judy and I went to the Roseville downtown Antique Fair a few weeks ago and found some really cute and functional ideas that inspired us. One item I found was an antiques silver tea pot made into a lamp. I loved the functional use and the silver pot is synonymous with tea and refinement. I must admit my mom gave me a small silver set, complete with cream and sugar. It was in a bad need of a polish so I went to work getting it back into shape. I love it so much I couldn't bare to drill a hole in the top and bottom rendering it useless in the future. So I found the below for $9.00 at the Discovery Thrift Shop in Bakersfield (By the way that was an incredible thrift shop with loads of vintage items all priced very low.) Here is the before:

And here is the After (which Richard, so thoughtfully helped me with):

ReMix - Something old made into something new. I took old unused & mismatched silver tea pot made it into a lamp. Thank you Richard, for drilling, cutting and handling the electrical. OXOX

June is a great month to spend a day with a friend

I want to plan a Saturday "get away" where I can get out and explore with a friend. I don't have to drive far to find some fun things to do. And with the weather clearing up many of my ideas are outdoor activities. So grab a friend and get going!

• Visit one of the California Missions or Adobes and discuss California History
• Meet at a favorite outdoor decore store and then go to JoAnns or Beverlys sewing and craft store to buy supplies to make something for your patio
• See a "GIRL" movie your husband would never take you to and discuss it afterward over a burger
• Visit a bookstore to browse and talk books over coffee/tea
• Window shop at the mall and make a list of items you'd like to someday add to your wardrobe
• Have lunch at a cafe that has outdoor dining (It feels very French)
• Take your cameras on a special hike, take photos, combine them, and have a slideshow at home, complete with popcorn and those HUGE candy bars
• Go for a bike ride and pack your lunch in a small backpack
• Meet at a gallery opening and have a drink afterward
• Walk your dogs together on a hike in the mountains
• Get a make up or skincare "Make over" together and bring items that you do not use or colors that don't work, and trade them (tip: Mary Kay offers free makeovers and skin care tips)
• Go on a Home Tour, take pictures of what you like, discuss over dessert

Exploring Pottery World - Rocklin CA

Last Weekend I did some exploring around Rocklin. I alreay love to shop at Beverly's crafts and on this very rainy Saturday, with time on my hands I decided to explore Pottery World in Rocklin and get some ideas to re-mix some of the things I had on hand at home.

Part Interior Décor - Part Inspiration

Pottery World has so much to offer: Floral, Furniture, & accessories, Interior Design Center Outdoor Décor - Fountains, Pottery, Patio Furniture & Accessories and my favorite part their wonderful restaurant.

In the art niches in the kitchen I wanted to bring the outdoors in and include some vegtables. I loved these peppers and the urns I already had.

I couldn't resist a birds nest. At Pottery World they had so many great birds nests and birds.

This clay bird came in three sizes. I liked that he is a bit hidden which I think makes him a great surprise to find.

This is a huricane candle that Richard and I got as a wedding gift. It looks great on our kitchen Island. All of this makes me feel like Spring is almost here!

A surprise old tin turns out some real treasures.

My Mom and I have been always enjoyed conversing about jewely and fashion. I am walking in her footsteps creating necklaces and re stringing beads in my latest desire to re-mix what I have at home. This past Saturday she handed me a large tin and told me there were necklaces and jewelry that my grandma Elsie Jacobsen owned and others she has collected over the years for her jewely designs.

Inside I found some real treasures!!!

I loved the Monet Classics! A few, one with multi strands, and one I need to re string (I'm salivating now).

Of course the cheap and fun fakes pearls are fabulous. In several different colors of neutrals. I plan on using those not good enough for a necklace on my Victorian Christmas Tree.

I found one short, "High Quality" with fine detail necklace with wonderful white leaves and rhinestone flower by DeMario NY Jewelry Robert De Mario designed jewelry from 1945-1960. He worked with faceted beads, pearls, including baroque pearls, and rhinestones. Much of his work has beads and pearls wired onto an ornate base. Excellent design and craftsmanship was his forte'. DeMario jewelry is very collectible since there was a very limited amount of it originally.

There was one Miriam Haskell piece that was my grandma's. My Aunt Nancy might have bought it for her as a gift. Miriam Haskell was an American designer of costume jewelry. Haskell founded her own company, one that still bears her name. With her creative partner Frank Hess, she invented affordable pieces of stunning originality from 1920 through the 1950's. Vintage examples and samples of Miriam Haskell designs are now much sought, held in both private collections and museums internationally. And to think I now have a piece too. When I find an outfit that rocks this necklace I will take a picture and post.

One necklace with cute daisy like pieces are an exact match to some 1950's style button earrings I received years ago from grandma. So that must be the matching necklace.

All in all it sure has been fun dreaming about the ways I will wear my necklaces and jewelry and feeling satisfied we will once again have many meaningful discussions about fashion and how I will re-mix some of this jewelry and just layer and ware the rest. Thank you MOM!!!

PreLoved - re think the fabrics/clothes/quality you love

http://www.preloved.ca/

Preloved, is a company in Toronto that recycles vintage sweaters, pants and other items and transform them into one-of-a-kind designs. The company has been around since 1995 and sells their products at small stores all over North America. They have three different product lines: Preloved, Handcut and BLoved. Preloved combines used and new fabrics, Handcut is made of 100% used fabrics. I love this concept, and as a sewer myself it makes me wonder what I have in my own wardrobe to remix.

Redesigned vintage clothing is a great idea, because while you might be able to find some decent clothes in your own closet, a trip to Discovery thrift stores, salvation army or goodwill may turn out some real treasures. Remember most of the clothes could use some altering to bring them up to date anyway, so a complete overhaul may just be fun.

The best thing about this concept is that with a little sewing knowledge, you can begin replicating their ideas yourself.

One thing that was key was turning the sweater upside down so that the old "bottom" could be used as a neckline or for the sleeves (you can see this technique being used int the sweater pictured left).

Another idea is to make a scarf using scraps of several cut up sweaters, combining colors and textures.

There are a lot of great articles all over the Internet about how to recycle your used clothing. http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.action?articleId=281474977191231 and another great place to find clothing that has been re made is www.etsy.com

My daughter Jenna has been creating wonderful blue jeans quilts with our used jeans. I have seen folks at rummage sales (3.00 a bag last day) fill large grocery bags with the left over jeans for these quilts if you don't have enough jeans lying around.

I Jonelle Tannahill pledge that I shall abstain from the purchase of "new" manufactured items of clothing, for the period of 2 months so that I may learn to remix what I have at home. I pledge that I shall refashion, renovate, recycle preloved items for myself with my own hands in fabric, yarn or other medium for the term of my contract. I pledge that I will share the love and post a photo of my refashioned, renovated, recycled, crafted or created item of clothing on my blog, so that others may share the joy that thy thriftyness brings!
